First annual Deaflympics held in Medford

Medford, Ore. — It was all fun and games at the first annual Deaflympics for deaf and hearing impaired children in Medford.

About 70 kids from all over Southern Oregon gathered to play and compete in Bear Creek Park Friday afternoon.

Event coordinators said the goal is to help the kids establish new friendships with others in the deaf community.

Mark Moskowitz with the Southern Oregon Education District said, “For the little ones to see older kids who are deaf/hard of hearing be successful in their lives – it really creates an atmosphere that they gain confidence.”

The event had its own version of the Olympic torch, and kids also took home awards.
