Gold Hill city officials say water is being stolen from hydrants

Gold Hill, Ore.–  Gold Hill city officials say a thief or thieves are depleting the water levels in their reservoir after reports of multiple fire hydrants in the city being tampered with.

Gold Hill City Mayor Christina Stanley says for about a month now, caps have been removed and missing from a handful of fire hydrants and their reservoir has been steadily receding.

City Councilor Debra West is asking for the community to keep an eye out for anything suspicious.

“We are moving into the summer here soon and this kind of thing could endanger the whole community if there was a fire,” says West.  “[I’m] hoping that everyone in the community will keep a vigilant eye on the hydrant near them.”

According to the Mayor, the city is losing more than 5,000 gallons of water each time a hydrant is found with a missing cap.

Jackson County Sheriff’s deputies are investigating, but say so far there is no evidence of water theft.
