Keeping your home safe for the holidays

Medford, Ore. — ‘Tis the season for home burglaries. With millions leaving town for the holidays Medford Police are reminding people to secure their homes before they go.

“You want to make your house at least somewhat difficult for a burglar to target so they move on and leave your house alone,” Lieutenant Mike Budreau said.

Step one: make your home look occupied. Budreau said motion censored lights or lights set to a timer usually do the trick.

“Typically criminals won’t go near a home if the lights are on,” he said.

Also, consider filing a vacation stop with your newspaper carrier, so they don’t pile up in your driveway.

Step two: make sure your home is secure. It may be a habit to lock your front door after you walk out, but don’t forget about the windows, garage, and back doors.

“The side access and rear access is very common for burglars and they will find a way to get into your backyard so if you have a gate make sure that’s secure,” he said.

No matter how excited you may be for your getaway don’t post your travel plans on social media. Because aside from maybe a well trusted neighbor who can keep an eye on your home, Budreau said you want as few people as possible to know you’re leaving.
