Campers pitch tents after algae warning lifted

Lost Creek Lake, Ore. — First it was lower than normal water levels, then it was a blue green algae alert. Lost Creek Lake has been affected by both, but now the water is once again deemed safe.

The Piedmont family from Medford set up camp Thursday, it’s their first camping trip of the year.

The family was relieved to hear that a blue green algae warning that was in place earlier this week was lifted. They still opted to keep their boat homeand despite the warning, and lower than normal lake levels, they say there is plenty more to do.

Park Ranger Mandy Hellmann says although the weekend is justbeginning, theyhave been busy. She addsthey’ve had a fewcancellationsover the past week while the algae alert was still in place. But for the most part, campers have been streaming in.

“The middle of June is when we really start picking up, more schools are out, everybody’s finally hitting the road, getting out there. and we love to see all the campers out here have a good time,” Hellmann said.

Just because the algae alert was lifted, doesn’t mean it can’t come back.

There are warning signs around the lake on what to look out for.
