Eagle Point City Council finalizing bus route measure

Eagle Point, Ore.– Come November there could be another option for transportation. That’s when voters will decide whether or not they want a bus route in Eagle Point.

Gregory Shaw cruises down Eagle Point’s Main Street on his bike often. He said it’s mostly because there’s no other way to get around.

“I’m 62, I’m retired, I’m a veteran, I have to go ride my bike and it’s economical.”

Mayor, Bob Russellled a meeting Tuesday nightwhere council finalized the wording of a ballot measure for a contract with the Rogue Valley Transportation District or RVTD.

“I think it’s good for economic development. I think it’s good for youthgoingto RCC for instance.”

He said it’s a plan that’s been in the works for two years.

“I’ve been mayor now for four years and they all say. ‘When are wegoingto get a bus’ but people don’t realize you have to pay for busservice.”

Russell said commuters will pay their farebut in order to get bus line up and running, Eagle Point homeowners will need to pay roughly 100 dollars in property taxes per year.

If approved, the route would go from the Eagle Point Wal-Mart to White City where connecting buses can take riders as far south as Ashland.

Riders like Gregory Shaw said it might cost money but a new bus line would save valuable time.

Mayor Russell saidRVTD still has togive it the final okay andif the bus measure passes then it could take up to a year from November for the bus route to start.
