(NBC News) Writing from the isolation unit at Emory University Hospital, Dr. Kent Brantly recalls the moment it was confirmed that he was infected with Ebola.
“When the result was positive,I remember a deep sense of peace that was beyond all understanding,” Brantley wrote in a statement released Friday.
He says he’s getting stronger every day and recounts holding the hands of other Ebola victims in Africa, writing “I witnessed the horror first-hand, and I can still remember every face and name.”
During testimony on Capitol Hill Thursday Ken Isaacs of Samaritan’s Purse called the international response to the outbreak so far a “failure” and warned the outbreak will spread to other countries if something isn’t done soon.
“This is a very nasty, bloody disease. I could give you descriptions of people dying that you cannot even believe,” Isaacs said.
The outbreak that began in Guinea this past spring has spread to Sierra Leone, Liberia and Nigeria. That country just declared a state of emergency.
Nearly 1,000 people in Africa have died.
The outbreak is likely to continue for months. It’s moving faster than efforts to control it.
