Klamath Falls city council explores pot law options

Klamath Falls, Ore. – The Klamath Falls city council is trying to figure out if they want to change any city ordinances to reflect new marijuana laws.

Legal marijuana for personal recreational use in Oregon is now less than a month away.

Klamath Falls Mayor Todd Kellstrom says the Klamath Falls city council held a work session Monday night to discuss marijuana enforcement issues…

“What council has in front of them is choices whether to ban it or regulate it, which we have the option to do here.”

City Attorney Joanna Lyons-Antley says the city also has the option to take no action…

“Because state law already prohibits a certain amount of activity, like use of marijuana under the age of 21.”

Police Chief David Henslee points out that council members are concerned about some issues that might not be addressed by state law…

“Minors being inside of a dispensary, or even growing marijuana in public view.”

Chief Henslee says he and the City Attorney will be working together to draft possible options for local marijuana regulations…

“And then take those back to council to see if they wanted to move forward with adopting those into code.”

For now, council is waiting to see how state lawmakers handle the marijuana issue.

While the city of Klamath Falls allows medical marijuana dispensaries, Klamath County is pursuing a year-long ban.
