Klamath Falls man dies in house fire

Klamath Falls, Ore. – A Klamath Falls man and his dog died in a house fire Monday night.

The fire broke out shortly after 7 at a home on Memorial Drive and the Southside Bypass.

Chief Casey Haugen of Klamath County Fire District #4 explains that firefighters couldn’t make entrance until they were able to clear some of the heavy smoke…

“That was when we discovered the body, and the man’s dog was at his feet.”

The man has been identified as 67 year old David Lyman, who died with his golden retriever named ‘Casey’.

“Pretty awesome guy.” Notes Lyman’s brother-in-law, Paul Mee. “He liked to hunt and fish, liked cutting wood. Good Dad.”

Mee was called in to make the identification.

“That was really not easy.”

But Mee had high praise for the emergency responders…

“I don’t know how the fire department does what they do.”

Investigators think the fire may have been sparked by a cigarette butt that was tossed into a trash can.

Cheif Haugen: “We believe it started on the far wall in the vicinity of the computer.”

The exact cause of Lyman’s death is still under investigation.

Investigators estimate the fire cause about 50 thousand dollars in damage to the home.
