Medford, Ore. — A local non profit that works to find stray cats forever homes is in danger of closing.

The Committed Alliance To Strays (C.A.T.S.) has taken in thousands of cats since it opened in Medford in 1990. Program volunteers say donations dropped during the recession and never really picked back up and that their costs add up.

“We use approximately 2 tons of cat litter a month and that’s $700; that’s not food or medical bills or anything like that,” said Robert Fowler, C.A.T.S. volunteer.

Volunteers say the more cats that they can help, the less there are on the streets spreading diseases and getting into people’s gardens.

If they don’t get donations in the next couple weeks, they’ll have to shut down operations.
