Medford man may face criminal charges in hash oil explosion

Medford, Ore.– Medford police and firefighters are investigating an explosion caused by a hash oil lab on Saturday. Officers and fire crews responded to the 100 block of Hamilton road just before 1 PM, for a reported explosion.

“We ultimately determined that it was a hash oil operation that basically caused a flash, or an explosion,” said Medford Police Lieutenant Mike Budreau.

According to reports, the fire was coming from the detached garage.

“When our guys got there, there was heavy involvement with fire and smoke and they did kind of initially knock it down from the outside,” Brian Fish said, Chief of Medford Fire-Rescue.

The man involved in the explosion had minor burns, and later went to a local hospital for treatment. His name has not been released, as the investigation is ongoing. It’s not clear if he will face criminal charges.

“As far as the legality side, it really depends, if somebody has a medical marijuana card, they can make and possess hash oil,” Lt. Budreau said. “It’s different though on the recreation side.”

The investigation is ongoing.
