Portland, Ore. — The Oregon Winegrowers Association is making fence post signs available for local wineries and vineyard owners to increase awareness about the risks of herbicide drift.
There’s growing concern across the state of Oregon about the systemic herbicide 2,4-d and its threat to vineyards. It’s one of the most widely used herbicides in the world and is known to wreak havoc on nearby grapevines.
Grapes are very sensitive to the chemical’s ability to disrupt growth. In some cases, the chemical can kill otherwise healthy vines. In wine-growing counties in California, there are strict rules regarding 2,4-d and Washington state has banned the most volatile forms.
