Report Crimes Via Text Messaging

It’s the first of it’s kind here in Southern Oregon, a new technology that allows the public to text anonymous crime tips to the Medford police.

Medford Area Drug and Gang Enforcement team, also known as MADGE has teamed up with CrimeStoppers of Southern Oregon to launch their new crime fighting text messaging tip service.

Here is how it works. To report a crime a resident can compose a text message from their cellphone. Your tips must be sent to “CRIMES” or the number 274637.

For drug or gang tips use the code “MADGE”. For crime stopper tips use the code “MEDCS”. After you type the code you can then enter your tip. Once the message is sent it will go through a server which hides your identity.

“The hope is that we stay connected to the community in every way possible,” said MADGE commander Lieutenant Brett Johnson.

But several residents have their concerns with the new technique to report crimes.

“Somebody who just doesn’t like how you look could put a tip out against you,” said Medford resident Kris Dean.

Other community members think the new technology is a great idea.

“Anytime the city or state has a way to catch people who are breaking the law it doesn’t matter to me. If the person is caught and they are brought to justice that’s all that matters,” said William Regan.

With a convenient and private way to communicate with the police MADGE says they hope the public will get involved. If you would like more information you can visit www.tipsoft.com or www.crimereports.com
