‘Republic of Jefferson Territory’ heading to ballot

An initiative that would overhaul Siskiyou County’s government is headed to the ballot.

Tuesday the Siskiyou County Clerk presented more than 18-hundred certified petition signatures to the board of supervisors.

The initiative aims to form the ‘Republic of Jefferson Territory’ “…Is in the constitution that congress is to guarantee every state in the union a republic form of government. It says it right in there, and they haven’t done it. So we’re trying to get back to making congress to guarantee that form of government. A true representative form of government” says Anthony Intiso, Jefferson Republic Action CMTE Chairman.

Those behind the movement say it would restore Siskiyou County to a constitutional government.

County supervisors voted to place the initiative on the June 3rd ballot without alteration.

It is different from the “State of Jefferson” movement which proposes seceding and forming a 51st state.
