Research says cell phones don’t belong on dinner tables

Many moms tell kids to keep their elbows off the dinner table and now new research suggests that moms should do the same with their smartphones.

Boston University researchers recruited 225 mothers and their 6-year-old children. They videotaped them during mealtime. When the women had cell phones and similar devices on the table, it greatly reduced the communication between mother and child.

When moms were distracted, they had 20-percent fewer verbal and 39-percent fewer non-verbal interactions with their children.
