Suspect speeds from police; crashes into power pole

MEDFORD, ORE. –A high-speed pursuit of a stolen car in Medford comes to a violent end and leaves hundreds of people in the dark without power.

It all started Wednesday night just before 11 o’clock when deputies with the Jackson County sheriffs office saw driver failing to stay in his lane your Delta Waters and Crater Lake Avenue.

“One of our deputies attempted to stop the vehicle, and the vehicle did not stop and took off at a high rate of speed,” said Lt.Christine Bronson, Jackson County sheriffs office.

Deputies quickly realized the truck was reported stolen as it sped down residential neighborhoods, eventually crashing into a power pole taking out power to the area.

But the crash only slow the suspect he began running, and jumping fences of nearby homes.

“The suspect tripped and we were able to take him into custody,” said Bronson.

Deputies arrested 19-year-old Nelson Cody Ray Martinez.

He appeared in the Jackson County court room via video Thursday.

He was arraigned on a number of charges including attempted a elude in a vehicle, attempting to elude on foot, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, criminal mischief in the 2nd degree, reckless driving, hit and run property damage, possession of methamphetamine and two outstanding warrants.

His bail has been set at $45,000.

Power has also since been restored.
