In the wake of an Oregon report, Japan canceled an offer to buy United State grains.
The Department of Agriculture announced today: unauthorized genetically modified wheat was found on an Oregon farm.
How did it get there
Right now, the USDA is investigating why genetically modified round up ready wheat was found on a Northeastern Oregon farm. The crop is not approved in the U.S.
“The way the farmer found out that this was in his field was he was spraying with round up and it didn’t die,” remarks Katie Mae’s bakery owner, Katie Oppenheimer. The discovery causing concern for local businesses like hers. “I have no way to test my wheat products which may be contaminated,” she says.
In fact, as a result Japan canceled an offer to buy U.S. grain. China, South Korea, and the Philippines are monitoring the situation.
The wheat found was a product of Monsanto, an agricultural bioengineering company. Monsanto says the FDA deemed round up ready wheat safe a decade ago.
