Man shoots police officer, takes woman hostage in Gladstone

0809 Jeffrey Carl GiddingsGladstone, Ore. – Oregon State Police shot a man they say fired at a police officer and took a woman hostage in a Subway Restaurant in Gladstone.

Police said the incident started when an officer tried to stop the suspect who was riding a bike on McLoughin Boulevard on Monday. When a second officer approached, the suspect fired a shot, striking Gladstone Police Sergeant Lee Jundt. The round struck Jundt’s bullet-resistant vest. He was not hurt.

The suspect, later identified as 45-year-old Jeffrey Carl Giddings, ran into a nearby Subway Restaurant and took a woman hostage.

Police said after Giddings refused to cooperate with law enforcement, a SWAT team stormed the restaurant and fired at Giddings. The hostage was uninjured. Giddings suffered non-life threatening injures and will be charged upon his release from the hospital.

Gladstone Police said Giddings had an active arrest warrant out of Klamath County for possession of heroin at the time of the incident.
