Ashland, Ore., — A party held by college freshman, back in their hometown for the weekend turned deadly –after police say one of the guests was murdered.

“At about 1 o’clock this morning, Ashland Police got a 911 call for an attack that happened on the 200 block of Strawberry Lane.”

Chief Tighe O’Meara says 20-year-old Avi Feldman and 22-year-old Pedro Sabalsa Mendez were at a house party, when Mendez stabbed Feldman multiple times.

“In the driveway for the house party, and that’s when the attack happened, and we don’t know why the attack happened, but it was witnessed, and unfortunately was fatal for Avi.” said O’Meara.

Police say the two knew each other, and were even friends on Facebook.

“They were friends from what we understand.” said O’Meara.

Matthew Picton lives in the area.

He says parties like this are common for the house, but it’s never escalated to violence.

“Their teenage daughter one or either of them have one time to time, but it’s never some sort of a rowdy event.”

Picton says everyone on the street knows each other, so hearing about the active homicide investigation this morning, was shocking.

“It was definitely very surprising because most of the neighbors on this block are probably in their 50s, 60s, or 70s and have older children, and nothing really happens along here.” said Picton.

Mendez is currently at the Jackson County Jail facing murder charges with no bail.

Police say there is no threat to the public at this time.

This is still an ongoing investigation, and we will keep you updated with information as it becomes available.
