Sen. Merkley wants answers on Trump administration’s alleged Russian ties

Salem, Ore. – Oregon’s Senator Jeff Merkley is asking for signatures on a petition to assign a special prosecutor to investigate the Trump administration’s alleged ties to Russia.

Sen. Merkley said an independent investigation is required because Attorney General Jeff Sessions, who would normally investigate such allegations, was a top advisor to President Trump’s campaign, “so any investigation he conducts would not be accepted by the American people as the whole truth.”

A post on Sen. Jeff Merkley’s website reads in part:

Did Mike Flynn break the law when he talked to the Russian Ambassador? Did the Trump campaign contact Russian intelligence services? What is the relationship between Trump’s team and the Russian government? What did Stephen Bannon and Donald Trump know, and when did they know it? The American people deserve answers.

President Trump has personally denied political ties to Russia. In a twitter post he said, “Russia has never tried to use leverage over me. I HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH RUSSIA – NO DEALS, NO LOANS, NO NOTHING!”
