Grandmother surrogates her own grandchild

Texas — A north Texas grandmother has given birth to her own grandchild. The 54-year-old woman served as a surrogate for her daughter, who battled infertility for years.

These images inside a Medical Center of Plano delivery room captured the moments Baby Kelcey came into the world on Wednesday. She was perfectly healthy at 6 pounds 11 ounces.

This C-section delivery might seem routine, but getting to this point was anything but.

“My husband and I had been trying for a baby for three years,” says Kelley McKissack, the mother of the baby. After failed attempts to become pregnant, 28-year old Kelley McKissack took a different and drastic approach. She asked her mother Tracy Thompson if she would carry her baby for her. Ironically, it was something she had jokingly asked her about before when she was only a teen.

“She said if I can’t carry my own baby would you ever carry it for me and I said of course, not dreaming I would actually be doing it,” says Thompson. It was a mother’s promise that would be called on, and she wasn’t about to go back on it.

“My lovely mom offered to give me the greatest gift I could ever have in my life,” says McKissack.

“The miracle happened and god watched over us,” Thompson says. Thompson had to be medically cleared to carry the baby, and closely monitored throughout the entire pregnancy. She was considered high risk and doctors didn’t have much precedent to go on when the decided to go ahead with the procedure.

“We had a very special pregnancy and special delivery and it couldn’t have worked out better in the end,” Dr. Joe Leveno, an OBGYN at the Medical Center of Plano. Now the family is sharing their message.

“Surrogacy is something that is a possibility for people,” says Thompson and a glance at what they’re calling a miracle.
