Holiday parties and recovery

Klamath Falls, Ore. – Parties can be a high point of the holiday season for many…but they can also be dangerous for those in recovery from drug and alcohol abuse.

Holidays are a popular time for parties.

But drug and alcohol counselors from ‘Full Circle Healing’ say that for an alcoholic, just one drink can lead to disaster.

“Well, one drink leads to a drunk.”  Notes substance abuse counselor Tim Jones.  “I don’t care how many years you have.”

“It can do all the damage in the world.”  Adds Fabrice Dolce, Full Circle Director.

Counselors caution that even non-alcoholic wines and beers can pose a problem.

“No, it’s a trigger for a lot of people.”  Says Jones.  “Just like energy drinks are a trigger for people with meth problems.”

“Six O’Douls equals one beer.”  Dolce points out.  “So yes, it can be problematic – it can be a trigger.”

If you’re throwing a party where drinks will be served, should you invite the person in recovery?

Fabrice Dolce:  “I don’t think it’s up to the host of the party to accept responsibility for the accountability of the addicted person.”

Tim Jones:  “But I would invite them, and let them make that choice.”

Dolce cautions that alcohol isn’t always the problem…

“The relationships cause one to relapse, 20 times as often as all the other things combined.”

Alcohol isn’t the only legal substance that could cause recovery problems…some counselors say that marijuana use could also trigger an addict to relapse.
