$5.2 million secured to protect northern California forests from wildfires

YREKA, Calif., — CAL FIRE is awarding $5.2 million to the Klamath National Forest and the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation to fund the “Craggy Vegetation Project.”

The project is designed to improve fire resilience and forest health conditions on National Forest lands near the communities of Yreka and Hawkinsville. More than 11,000 acres will be treated through the project.

Jonathan Birdsong, Western Regional Director for the NFWF, said in part, “It is these kinds of federal-state-local partnerships that not only help protect watersheds and communities but lead the
state on the art of the possible as it relates to forest health and community wildfire protection.”

According to the NFWF, CAL FIRE will issue a grant agreement in September and will continue to administer the funding to KNF as the projects are implemented. Under the grant, the Forest Service has four years to complete the project.
