5-year-old Georgia student gets paddled by principal, mom threatened with jail

Covington, GA. (NBC) – A five-year-old elementary student was paddled by his principal, and his mother says she was threatened with jail if she intervened.

Shana Marie Perez, of Covington, Ga., posted two videos on Facebook showing the incident that took place at Jasper Primary School, southeast of Atlanta.

“I couldn’t do anything to stop them,” Perez wrote in a post accompanying one of the videos.

A statement released by the Jasper School District said that under school rules, corporal punishment is permitted “as one of the consequences of behavior”.

The mother wrote in a Facebook post, “They told me if he could not get a paddling he would have to be suspended and if he got suspended for even one day I WILL go to jail for truancy. I could not go to jail or my kids would have nothing.”
