Armed student found on Gresham high school rooftop

1206-sam-barlow-high-schoolGresham, Ore. – On the evening of Saturday, December 3rd, students attending a school dance at Sam Barlow High School in Gresham reported a suspicious person on the roof near the school parking lot.

The Gresham Police Department said school resource officer Sam Barlow immediately responded to the scene. He went to the roof and identified the suspicious person as a student under the age of 18.

GPD said the student was cooperative and told the officer he was there in a “security capacity to ensure the safety of students attending the dance.” The student was found with two unloaded handguns and ammunition. The guns were seized as part of the investigation.

According to police, the student did not say he wanted to hurt anyone, but he was still arrested on multiple weapon possession charges and taken into custody.

“The students who spotted the individual and reported it to school administration are to be commended,” said Superintendent Jim Schlachter. “It’s important for everyone in the school community to watch for unusual situations and report what they see or hear right away. This is key to keeping our schools safe.”

The high school is working with police to continue the investigation. Officials will not release any more information at this time.

Anyone with information about the incident is encouraged to call police.
