Friends speak out about search for missing kayaker

Grants Pass, Ore. — Friends of Corey Maleski reported him missing on Sunday morning, after they say he took off in a kayak from Tom Pierce Park, just after 7:45 AM. The group planned on meeting up with him at Riverside Park, however he never made it.

“He scooted off, I asked him if he was ok, he’d done this run over and over again,” Randy Deming said, a friend of Maleski.

Deming has been been involved in the search for Maleski ever since.

“I was out here clear up until about 3:30 last night, and didn’t see anything really,” Deming said. “I went and drank coffee at Denny’s all night, and came back out here at dawn.”

Deming noted Maleski wasn’t an professional kayaker, however he was experienced in the water.

“He’d done a few before on other rivers farther up the mountains, Cow Creek and all that,” Deming said. “Especially during flood times, because there was a lot of rain up there.”

The group searched the Baker Park area on Monday, along with Josephine and Jackson County Sheriff’s deputies, Josephine County Search and Rescue, and Oregon State Police. Officials say the search will continue everyday. For more information on the search, click here.
