Gender-inclusive bathrooms for University of Iowa

NC_transiowa0708_1500x845Iowa City, Iowa (KWWL) — The University Of Iowa is in the process of converting nearly 150 on-campus bathrooms to gender-inclusive.

More than 40 volunteers reviewed the hundreds of bathrooms on campus this spring, taking note of number of stalls and the signs outside.

They found 147 existing restrooms have just one stall inside, making those ideal restrooms to be labeled “gender-neutral.”

“They just don’t have consistent signage that says this is a gender-neutral restroom. All of them are single use restrooms and we are just going to be saying this is a gender-neutral restroom. You can use it,” Sean Finn, President of UI Trans Alliance says.

The restrooms could be a draw for the future transgender students wanting to come to the University Of Iowa.
