Historic marker stolen in Jacksonville

Jacksonville, Ore. —  A historic marker in Jacksonville is gone, and now the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office is investigating. NBC5 spoke with the resident who discovered the theft, and she hopes whoever took the marker, will return it.

The plaque reads “Along this road passed the early travel of Oregon”, and it was dedicated in 1939 so that all who traveled on the Old Stage Road would know it’s history. The dedication marker has set at the scenic turn out since 2003, but sometime this week the bronze plaque was stolen along with a mountain locator attached to the stones for visitors.

“We would love to retrieve it, it’s priceless really. I’m sure it’s worth much more in sentimental value than anything a person could get for scrap metal,” resident Joanne Wilcox says.

Anyone with information on the theft is asked to call the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office at (541) 774-6800.
