Medford councilor to run for Bates’ senate seat, as commissioners look to appoint someone in interim

batesMedford, Ore. — The Jackson County Democrats are making plans to give Jackson County Commissioners a handful of candidates who could fill Senator Alan Bates’ senate seat until the November election.

On August 19th, Jackson County Democrats will meet with precinct committee members to choose 3 to 5 candidates.

Those picks will be given to the county commissioners — all 3 happen to be Republicans– and they will have the final say.

“Rest assured that I will do the best job in anything I’ve done in this position for the citizens of Jackson County,” Commissioner Colleen Roberts says, “and Senator Bates leaves some pretty big shoes to fill.”

Democrats will meet a second time to then pick a candidate for the November ballot. They tell us it could be the interim senator or it could be someone different.

Senator Bates died Friday while fly fishing with his son. Autopsy results have not yet been released.
