A Mother’s Reaction

11 year old Ireland Lane hopes to return home to Klamath Falls after she recovers from her burn injuries.

NBC2’s Lyle Ahrens spoke with the girl’s mother in Tennessee by phone…

Ireland Lane’s mother Danielle is still in shock from the news…

“She was in the hospital, and she was doing arts and crafts, and she started on fire is all I know.”

Ireland Lane lives in a home not far from downtown Klamath Falls…and goes to school just a few blocks away at Conger Elementary.

Ireland Lane was taken to Doernbecher Children’s Hospital in Portland after she fell and hit her head at Conger Elementary, losing consciousness. School officials aren’t allowed to talk about the incident.

Danielle Lane says she’s having a hard time believing that her daughter Ireland was burned by sanitizer igniting…

“They told me what happened, and I had no idea because my first thought was, I would like the ‘Mythbusters’ to prove it to me.”

Hand sanitizer is over 60% alcohol, and will ignite easiliy.

But Danielle isn’t convinced that a static spark from sheets is responsible…

“I still can’t wrap my head around how it happened – and I don’t understand. Because honestly, I thought it was oxygen sparking.”

Ireland Lane will be turning 12 this Thursday…and also undergoing skin graft surgery.
