Lodi, Calif. — (KCRA) Management at a Lodi, California movie theater was was made aware of a bedbug infestation several weeks before a complaint prompted a sudden shutdown Sunday.
Jeff Hood, a Lodi city spokesperson, said the city’s code enforcement staff received one complaint three weeks ago about the theater and was assured that the problem was treated and resolved.
Stephanie Booth said she noticed the problem three weeks ago after she went to the movies with her daughter.
“Later that night, I woke up and I broke out in a rash and also my daughter had it, too,” she said. “They were on my shoulders and my legs and my back. And my daughter got it on her arm, too.”
Catherine DePrima, the director of marketing for SR Entertainment, the parent company of the cinema, said in a statement that the theater “acted as quickly as possible” after a complaint from one family Friday.
“There was limited evidence of insect activity in a few auditoriums and we are entering a three-stage eradication phase during which time our theaters will be closed to the public,” the statement continued.
The theater expects to open again Thursday.
The technical director for Clark Pest Control said getting rid of all the bedbugs for a large-scale facility like a movie theater may require fumigation or volumetric heat.
