Blue lights provide source of encouragement

Central Point, Ore. — Central Point residents are looking to make a statement this month and let local law enforcement know they’re appreciated. And police are expressing their gratitude in return.

Hundreds of residents have put blue light bulbs on their front porches as a way to say thank you. But Central Point Police Detective Josh Abbott said those bulbs provide more than light, they’re also a source of encouragement.

“It’s an easy job to get jaded in especially with everything going on right now,” he said. “So it’s really nice to see those lights.”

Abbott said they want residents to know the appreciation goes both ways. Patrol officers have begun putting door hangers on homes with “Thank you” signs or blue light bulbs telling them thank you in return. The officer signs the door hanger with the time the neighborhood was patrolled.

“It’s two fold. It shows them we notice you’re supporting us and it shows them we’re out patrolling your neighborhood,” he said.

Bobbio’s Pizza in Central Point is giving away free blue light bulbs with any purchase. The co-owner said they received a shipment of 500 last week. Days later, they have 200 left.
