Trenton, N.J. — (NBC News) Two former top aides to New Jersey Governor Chris Christie were in court Tuesday to fight turning over documents regarding lane closures on the nation’s busiest bridge.
Former Christie Deputy Chief of Staff Bridget Kelly arrived at Mercer County Court with her lawyer, saying nothing in her first appearance in public since being fired in January.
Christie’s former campaign manager Bill Stepien did not attend the hearing.
It’s an email Kelly sent last August– “time for some traffic problems in Fort Lee”– which sent state and federal investigators scrambling to look into lane closures on the George Washington Bridge and the traffic mess it caused for several days last September.
The email was the first indication that the lane closures might have been directed by the governor’s office and motivated by political payback.
The state legislative committee investigating the lane closure wants to see more emails and text messages, assuming they exist.
