Campaign to help kids gets national recognition

Medford, Ore —A Southern Oregon program is getting national recognition through its efforts in supporting local kids affected by school budget cuts.

The YES campaign- Youth Education Success was awarded the Service to America – Service to Children Award from the National Association of Broadcasters.

“We are truly humbled by receiving this prestigious national award,” said Bob Wise, Vice President and General Manager of KOBI-TV/NBC5 and KOTI-TV/NBC2.

NBC5 launched YES to help support local school programs affected by budget cuts. On a designated day each month, local YES businesses donate a percentage of their earnings to YES. Local educators can apply for grants.

Whether they’re expanding their learning skills through music with handmade djembe drums, a small garden in Rural Ruch, or a brand new greenhouse for learning science, the YES program has awarded over $65,000 in grants to Southern Oregon and Northern California schools.

The YES program, still in its infancy, wouldn’t be possible without its partners and YES businesses,” said Wise.

The partners of YES that have helped make the program possible are Lithia Auto Stores, AmericanWest Bank, Regence BlueCross BlueShield, and CenturyLink. The United Way of Jackson County acts as the fiscal agent for YES.

This is NBC5 and NBC2s second NAB Service to America Award. In 2009, the stations were honored for the Emmy Award winning Southern Oregon Meth Project.
