Wash. — (NBC News) Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel is stepping down.
Hagel’s resignation was announced Monday during a brief appearance with President Obama.
“When its mattered most, behind closed doors at the Oval Office, you’ve always given it too me straight for that I will always be grateful,” President Obama told Hagel as he made the announcement.
Sources say the former Republican Senator from Nebraska, a decorated enlisted soldier in Vietnam, was under pressure after he failed to impress in multi-agency meetings on national security and clashed with White House insiders.
