Staff at the Rogue River Community Center Food Pantry had mixed things to say about murder suspect Susan Monica who frequently visited. However, most pantry workers we spoke with agreed that something was “off” about her.
Staff said Monica visited once a month for the last eight-or-so years.
“She was a very pleasant, generous person,” began Sue Smith, the Director of the Rogue River Community Center.
“It’s the usual story, oh that person is really nice and…it’s just shocking,” she continued.
Monica has been indicted by a grand jury on murder and abuse of a corpse charges; abuse of a corpse, meaning mutilation of a dead body.
She’s also charged with identity theft.
However, not everyone at the pantry is shocked by the allegations.
“She was very standoffish so I wasn’t surprised. No,” said Mattie, a woman who works at the food pantry and would not reveal her last name.
Mattie said her family has done work on Monica’s property. She said Monica told her she was battling cancer.
“Over the past few years she lost her hair and she just wasn’t the same Susan that she started off being,” Mattie said.
Most of the pantry workers we spoke with agree, saying there was something “off” about Monica.
“She was kind of normal but she was also somewhat scary,” said Diana Aarons, the pantry manager.
“I felt uncomfortable and I can’t tell you why when she would come in,” she continued.
Staff said Monica let people she just met at the food pantry, stay at her home.
Pantry workers also said she lived with her animals and especially loved her pigs.
