Criticizing weight study

People who are teased or criticized for their weight are likely to put on even more pounds.

A study of overweight adults found those who felt judged or discriminated against were six times more likely to become obese than those who didn’t feel shamed for their weight.

In fact, those with a more positive self-image became slightly slimmer. Experts say criticism can drive overweight people to eat for comfort and fear of being ridiculed keeps them from hitting the gym, and it’s not just the general public who tend to be negative toward obese people.

Studies have shown people feel judged and ignored by their own doctors.
