Del Norte County woman fights off attacker

Near Crescent City, Calif.– Frightening moments for a Del Norte County woman Monday after a good deed turned life threatening. The woman is alive because she fought off her attacker. It seemed innocent enough, a woman was hitch hiking with her baby in the rain last night just outside crescent city. But it all turned ugly when a man armed with a knife got into the car as well.

The driver picked up the three people on Parkway Drive. Once the man jumped in he threatened her with a knife to drive to Walker Road off Highway 199

Commander Bill Steven with the Del Norte County Sheriff’s office said the man tried to sexually assault the driver, but she fought back and got away on foot.

“She was able to get away and find some people that were driving by that helped her and got her to the hospital and law enforcement.”

Commander Steven said the man and the woman with the baby did not take off with the victim’s car.The man wasreferredto as “Mark” and described as a white male adult in his mid 20’s wearing blue jeans with a black and red baseball cap. The female hitch hiker has dirty blonde hair and was wearing a red sweater. The baby was referred to as “Lucas” and is believed to be 12-16 months old. Commander Steven said the victim sustained minor injuries. And that this serves as a reminder for people to be very careful if picking up hitch hikers.
