Medford, Ore. — Two years ago Monday Sheryl and Shannon Baird filed for a domestic partnership, the closest they could get to marriage.
“You just love somebody and you just keep moving forward,” Sheryl Baird said.
And today they couldn’t be happier moving forward and being a part of history.
“The text came in at like 12:06 or 12:07 that the judge had made his ruling, lifted the ban, and I said ‘honey let’s go to the courthouse!'” Shannon Baird said.
Minutes later they were there, applying for a marriage license.
“People say it’s just a piece of paper, it’s just a piece of paper, we don’t need to be legally married. But it’s not just a piece of paper,” Shannon Baird said.
Shortly after the couple received their license they completed their union by getting married in front of the fountains across the street from the courthouse.
“Love is love and that’s all that really matters,” Sheryl Baird said.
The Jackson County Clerk said four gay couples were issued marriage licenses Monday including the Bairds.
