Grants Pass mobile home fire ruled as arson

Grants Pass, Ore. — A Grants Pass man is in jail after allegedly setting fire to the mobile home he called home.

The fire broke out on the 3900 block of Highland Avenue just after 9 PM on Thursday.

All 10 residents of the trailer were able to get out, however, one dog died in the fire.

Most of the damage was contained to the inside of the home.

But firefighters say it could have been much worse.

“Earlier in the day with the high winds, and low humidity that we’ve been experiencing, had the fire occurred at that time of the day, it could have been a much different situation for the entire neighborhood,”said Austin Prince, Division Chief for Rural Metro.

Police arrested Darrell Butchko on suspicion of arson.

He remains in the Josephine County Jail.

An investigation into how or why the fire was started continues.
