Great Meadows Opens to Snowmobiles

Snowmobile season at Lake of the Woods is now getting underway, thanks to a white Christmas…

George Gregory of the Lake of the Woods Resort formally opened the snow park to snowmobiles today…

“This is some of the best early snow that we’ve had in a long time. There’s not a lot of base out there, but we were riding almost to Four Mile Lake in 5 to 6 feet of snow yesterday.”

According to ODOT measurements, there’s about 42 inches of snow on the ground at Great Meadows.

Recreation Program Manager Michael Boles of the Fremont-Winema National Forest says that was enough for Forest Service officials to give a ‘green light’ to snowmobiles…

“I’m sure that many of the clubs are chomping at the bit to get up there – and today’s the day.”

Great Meadows almost didn’t open to snowmobiles last year.

“We did open in December.” Notes Boles. “But then we had a mild January, so then we had to close, and then re-open later, when the snow returned. So, it was very sporadic.”

George Gregory notes that the snowmobile traffic from Medford and Klamath Falls could help boost business at Lake of the Woods…

“We are absolutely thrilled to have this kind of start to winter here at Lake of the Woods. The last few years have been really slim on the snow, and this is just going to be great for everybody.”

Snowmobile season at Great Meadows normally runs through early April.

The season can be suspended if snow levels drop to the point where the meadows, or snowmobiles could be damaged.
