Homeowner shocked by what’s left of home on Copco Road

Ashland, Ore. — Imagine coming home to nothing but ash. For one woman who lived on Copco Road that thought is a reality.

Judy Trautman lived in her home for 34 years. She said the home in the woods was a great place to raise a family.

“I moved here from Washington D.C., fell in love, and never looked back,” Trautman said.

But the place that housed so many memories went up in flames Thursday in the Oregon Gulch Fire.

“It was a fire storm. It wasn’t a small fire. It came in like a tornado and wiped out everything,” Trautman said.

The fire has since burned 32,477 acres in Southern Oregon and Northern California and continues to threaten hundreds of homes.

“Everything is covered in ash. It looks like a moonscape or something,” Trautman said.

The family was able to grab only a few valuables as they rushed to evacuate. Because of the remote location, insurance didn’t cover the home.

“It’s hard to know everything you owned is just gone,” Trautman said.

Now, an eery and surreal landscape is all that remains.

“It’s just a smoldering mess of gray ash, devastation, that’s about all I can say there’s nothing there,” she said.

But Trautman said she’ll hold it together and hopes to one day build another home in the same place.
