Ireland Lane Returns Home

A 12 year old girl who suffered third-degree burns in a freak accident involving hand sanitizer and static electricity is back home in Klamath Falls…

Cancer survivor Ireland Lane has been through a lot in her 12 years.

She was diagnosed with a rare form of kidney cancer in 2007…

“The first surgery was when I was six.” Notes Ireland. “And now I’m 12, 6 years later, and I’ve already had 42 surgeries. I can’t really divide that right now.”

Ireland was taken to a Portland hospital following a fall at school.

She was playing with sheets to make static electricity 2 months ago, when a spark ignited hand sanitizer on her shirt.

Her father Stephen Lane was horrified…

“It says ‘flammable until dry’, ‘keep away from open flame’ – but it doesn’t say, can be sparked – or intense heat, or I mean – there’s so many things that can light hand sanitizer on fire.”

Ireland spent her 12th birthday undergoing skin grafts.

But just a little over a week ago, Ireland came back home, and returned to class at Conger School…

“I missed my friends, and I’m finally back.” Says Ireland.

Stephen Lane says he’s learned a lot from his daughter…

“I can look at her and think, well, she’s gone through everything she’s gone through, and still smiles, and plays, and can be a kid. So, I can go through my aches and pains.”

Ireland still has a lot of recovery ahead of her.

But as soon as you meet her, you realize she’s a survivor.

“I believe, and I have faith.” States Ireland. “And if Jesus went through what he went through to wash away our sins, I think I can go through what I’m going through right now.”

An account has been opened at all branches of US Bank under the name ‘Ireland Lane’ for those who wish to help the family with expenses.
