Medford, Ore. — The Jackson County Commissioners unanimously approved $306 million for the 2014-2015 fiscal year on Wednesday.
The budget is an increase of about $5 million over the previous one.
One of the reasons why is because of an increase in the Health and Human Services Department, which is in response to the Affordable Care Act.
Commissioner Don Skundrick told NBC 5 News on Thursday that because the library and extension districts were passed by voters in the May Primary, $5.2 million were relieved from the general fund.
And while the county will break even this year, he is looking optimistic towards future budgets for the county.
“It would be nice to see us have some more availability of our natural resources to bring in addition to our revenues. It will never will be like it was before, but we do have opportunities out there by working with our federal partners,” Skundrick said.
There was also a one year extension to the Rural Schools Act, which helped boost the budget.
Commissioner Skundrick says since property values are also up, there was an increase in tax revenue.
