Klamath Falls Facing Bitter Cold, ‘Red’ Burn Advisories

It was 15 degrees below zero this morning in Klamath Falls…But wood stove use is not allowed due to poor air quality.

Hazy conditions from wood stove smoke are resulting in unhealthy conditions for sensitive groups.

“We’re pretty close to reaching ‘unhealthy’ for everyone – so, definitely limit your time outdoors.” Klamath County Air Quality Inspector Jim Carey adds that most wood stove users are complying with the request not to burn. “Today we’ve even gone further, and asked people outside the air quality zone not to burn.”

The cold weather is also having other impacts in Klamath Falls.

Ben Hirengen of Waste Management notes that garbage pickups have been running late for several hundred customers…

“We are having a few delays. We’ve got some slick areas, but everybody’s running at this point.”

Klamath Falls City Schools, and Klamath County Schools were all open for business today.

But the geothermally heated Ella Redkey pool, normally open year round, has remained closed due to extreme temperatures.

The pool is normally kept at 83 degrees – but freezing conditions have dropped that temperature to below 70.

Roads remain slick, and traffic is moving – but some drivers still want to step on the gas.

Conditions have been even colder for viewers in Lakeview, where temperatures dropped to 27 below zero Sunday morning.

A ‘red’ burning advisory for Lakeview will run at least through Thursday.
