Lake County rancher kills 490 pound black bear

Lakeview County, Ore. — A Lake County rancher shot and killed a massive black bear.

The 6-foot 5-inch (nose to tail) nearly 500-pound male bear was found in the middle of a herd of cattle and killed by ranchers in North Lake County earlier this month.

The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife says the owners were legally allowed to kill the bear after the huge animal killed a $1,000 cow.

Field biologists said the bear was 13 to 15 years old based on tooth samples.
