Lightning sparks 10 small fires in Jackson and Josephine counties

Ore. — Lightning is being blamed for 10 small fires in Jackson and Josephine counties overnight.

The Oregon Department of Forestry says the largest fires have only been about a quarter of an acre in size.

The cooling temperatures and accompanying rain are something fire prevention specialist Brian Ballou says is a bit early for the season.

“We’ve got a lot of summer left, and we’re hoping people continue to be very cautious with anything that might cause a fire because this is the kind of year we can have a big fire, really fast.”

The fire danger level remains at high, but Ballou says with the return of hot and dry weather expected next week, the level may soon be upgraded to extreme.
