Measure 92: GMO labeling law

Ashland, Ore. — November is fast-approaching and proponents of the GMO labeling measure are working hard to convince people to vote yes on Measure 92.

A nationally recognized expert on GMO food labeling, Dr. Michael Hansen stopped by the Ashland Farmers Market to support the measure. He says consumers have a right to know what’s in their food.

According to Hansen, 64 countries already require GMO labeling, the power of the industry powered by tech companies is basically preventing the government from requiring safe assessments or requiring labeling and if it’s not happening at the national level, it’s up to states to lead the way.

Hansen says a labeling law would not raise the cost of food because labels are frequently changed, but opponents contend it would raise food prices. In May, Vermont became the first state to pass a GMO labeling law, a similar labeling initiative in Oregon failed in 2002.
