Medford, Ore. — One substitute at Washington Elementary was not in the classroom Wednesday. He quit but we don’t know exactly why. We do know he was being investigated for allegedly spanking a student.
Medford Police Lt. Mike Budreau said “with everyone at a heightened sense, any contact between a substitute and a student is going to be heavily scrutinized.”
Lt. Budreau said there was no spanking but that it is a serious allegation that they always investigate. The substitute was trying to escort the student from the picket line to the classroom.
Lt. Budreau said “it looks like one of the substitute teachers had touched the child in more of an escort fashion to try to move the child along and touched him on the backside.”
The investigation by Medford Police revealed that the substitute didn’t break the law.
“It’s not criminal, there was no intent to harm the child or there is no sexual intent there,” said Lt. Budreau.
Nevertheless, district officials confirm that the substitute teacher did quit. What prompted that decision we don’t know.
