Mistrial declared in Kerrick trial

(NBC News) A mistrial has been declared in the manslaughter trial of former Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police officer Randall Kerrick.

The judge overseeing Kerrick’s trial made the decision late Friday after jurors repeatedly told him they were deadlocked on a verdict.

Protests erupted outside the courthouse immediately the racially charged case came to an end.

Kerrick, who is white, shot and killed Jonathan Ferrell, an African-American, while responding to a burglary call on September 14 of 2013.

Ferrell, it turned out, had been in an automobile accident and was seeking help at the home of the woman who called police.

Kerrick fired 12 shots, striking Ferrell ten times, shortly after arriving on the scene.
