Peterson enters plea

(NBC News) Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson has pleaded no contest to a charge of misdemeanor reckless assault.

Peterson, who was facing felony child abuse charges for allegedly beating his child with a switch, will avoid jail time with the plea.

Peterson admitted he disciplined his son with a switch at his Texas home earlier this year, leaving marks on the boy’s legs.

“I truly regret this incident. I stand here and take full responsibility for my actions. I love my son, more than anyone of you could imagine, and I’m looking forward to, and I’m anxious to continue my relationship with my child,” Peterson said afterward.

Peterson’s punishments include a $4,000 fine, court costs, parenting classes and 80 hours of public service, half of which includes the production of a public service announcement.
